I agree with Carragher. The 1999 United side are iconic because they made history. But they didn't change how most teams play or see football. No way. Like how Inter 2010 didn't either.

Ferguson had as remarkable career and was a serial winner, but was never a master tactician with a unique style of play. Man management and mentality define Fergie. Consistency even.

Michelis influenced Cruyff who influenced Pep. These three + Aragonés are the key figures behind the the great Ajax, Netherlands, Barcelona and Spain teams of post WW2 football.

Sacchi was influenced by Helenio Herrera and Total Football (Rijkaard, Gullit and van Basten were key to his Milan team). He has influenced coaches like Klopp, Pep and Sarri.

Brazil 1970 were special also.

Football evolves to counter tactics that are currently dominant. Italian catenaccio evolved into a more zonal marking system and created the platform for italian success at club and international level.

A lot of the pressing in todays game was an important factor behind english club sides dominance in europe before heysel.

England never really dominated European football during that time. Liverpool did. They were in 5 European Cup finals between 1977 and 1985.

Forest had their brief 2 years of success.

I think England's best spell overall was between 2005 to 2012. United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all played in the final. And if they weren't in the final, they were in the SF.

The system seemed more suited to club football perhaps because the standard was generally below international level so opponents would be more overwhelmed by it. Not only forest and liverpool but teams like ipswich and villa were highly regarded around that time. Who knows what would've happened if heysel hadn't arrived. The success might've continued.

Everton were a very good team. Heysel cost them a shot at the European Cup in 1985/86. Cost us a shot at the ECWC too.
