Was excited to sign him based on his time at Leeds.

Energetic, brave and would make his presence known.

He was obviously plagued by injuries from 2005 onwards and was never the same player.

His volley technique was world class.

He never really fulfilled the promise he showed at Leeds during 2000/2001. He's one of those players who suited the late 90's and early 00's football. Striker partnerships and traditional wingers.

The Roma game epitomised Smith. Full throttle.

I liked him, but think he ended up being wasted here (partly due to injury of course)

He was tenacious, energetic, a good work-rate and was a very good finisher. He was never world class of course and wouldn't have ever been first choice, but he was a good player to have as 3rd choice striker.

Fergie tried to turn him into Roy Keane's replacement and he did do ok in midfield, but he wasn't a midfielder and moving him there didn't play to his strengths.
