The Under 23's Thread

Recommended Posts

Manchester United has completed a restructure of the Under-23s coaching set-up.

The club announced the appointment of Neil Wood as lead coach of the Under-23s; he will be assisted by Quinton Fortune. The restructure also sees Head of Academy Nicky Butt undertake increased involvement in the team’s overall programme.

Neil, a former Manchester United youth-team player, returned to the club as a coach in 2014, following a playing career in the English Football League. He has coached across Under-16s, Under-18s and Under-23s during his time at the club.

Quinton, who featured 126 times for United, won the Premier League alongside Butt in 2002/03 and recently completed his UEFA A Licence.

Nicky Butt said: “The Academy is completely focused on producing well-rounded players for our first team and we believe that this new structure provides the perfect platform to achieve this aim.

”Myself, Neil and Quinton have long-standing connections with Manchester United and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our roles that we will pass on to the young players. It is such an exciting time for the Academy with Ole as first-team manager, who truly believes in the development of homegrown talent. It was a great source of pride that three Academy graduates made their first-team debuts last season. As a group, we will now look to build on this success.”

After a very disappointing season under Sbragia with what was a promising start this season is filled with new enthusiasm under the new management structure.

I've decided rather than put my spin on the reports this season I will be as lazy as @JJtheRed (he knows what I'm talking about) and just copy & paste links from the United website!!

Great start to the season as we pummeled West Brom!

Given our inability to sort the midfield I hope to god Gomes & Garner shine in the Europa so we can start bringing the min sooner to at least try - they're killing it so far in the u23s at least - likewise if Martial misses time Chong should probably make the bench

Garner might have a better career than both Gomes and Greenwood.

He's plays a combination of DM/CM and is scoring like a striker from a Pirlo role. Scary form.

Give him a go mate I say. At this stage I'd take him over Lingard.

PS According to reports we may have a star centre back at the club.

Watch out for Teden Mengi made his debut for under 23's v Newcastle and was faultless just need to get rid of Smalling and Jones as they're taking up spaces for these guys trying to break through.

Your ability to overrate form from level below non-league is genuinely hilarious. You never learn.

This is the best group of teenagers we’ve amassed since 2009-2011’s group (Brady, King, Pogba, Lingard, Keane and Morrison).

Greenwood, Gomes, Garner, Laird, Levitt and O’Connor are all likely to play PL football. If 2-3 of them make it here, happy days.

O’Connor being linked with a move to Celtic.

Good move for him. He needs 1st team football. He’ll be playing PL football by 21/22 if he fills out a bit more.

A bad week all around at United as the Under 23's lost their first game of the season. Ironic this week we drop to second behind WEST HAM!!😔

United are quite depleted with a lot of youngsters now in the first team reckoning. Went all wrong after Bernard got dismissed.

The Under 23's returned to action with a convincing win away to Swansea with Ramazani on the scoresheet again.

Not long until he is called up especially if Ole rates Chong!!

United remain 2nd behind West Cunt Ham

Another convincing win for the lads. 3-1 v Stoke.

Seems Solskjaer has abandoned Greenwood, Gomes and Chong for the time being the latter didn't really impress.. but Greenwood should still be involved in first team match day squads imo.

He scored along with Largie again ☺

Just giving them match time. Chelsea in The EFL Cup next week, and The U23s play against Doncaster in The EFL Trophy.

So lots of potential minutes ahead of them.

Gomes was injured, as was Levitt. Stoke were very dirty and 3-1 flattered them. Could have been 6-2.

Won 4-1 tonight. Away to Middlesbrough who could have scored more, but we eventually put them to the sword.

  • Kovar was excellent for us. Saved a penalty.
  • Chong assisted 1 goal & scored 2 goals
  • Puigmal scored a lovely free kick and then finished off a one-two with Chong for his 2nd goal.
  • Mejbri with a very, very impressive cameo. Peach of a ball to set up Chong and he almost scored after coming on.

We will definitely be getting promoted this season.
