Current champions: Barcelona

Barcelona

Barcelona have dominated the competition this decade, winning 7 out of a possible 10 titles. They've also dominated The Copa del Rey, but it's The Champions League that they really want. Their fiercest rivals, Real Madrid, have blow everyone away in Europe in recent years. But Barcelona should be very strong in the league once again, thanks to one Lionel Messi and the summer additions of Frenkie de Jong, Antoine Griezmann and Junior Fipro. With the Spanish transfer window still open, further transfer activity might be a possibility this window.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético have been a very consistent top 3 La Liga outfit under Diego Simeone who has just ripped apart the nucleus of his 2014 title winning defence in favour for a much needed revamp and injection of youth. The club have sold/released over a dozen players and have brought in 9 players to replace them, including the purchase of Marcos Llorente from city rivals Real, Portuguese wonderkid João Félix, and England lionheart Kieran Trippier. They have looked terrific in pre-season, so who knows what the season has in store for this new squad. Maybe even an outside chance of winning La Liga.

Real Madrid

Like Atlético, Real Madrid have has a very busy transfer window this summer. They've brought in Eden Hazard from Chelsea, Luka Jović from Eintracht Frankfurt, Ferland Mendy from Lyon, Éder Militão from Porto, and 18 year old Rodrygo from Santos in Brazil. Unlike their city rivals, they've lost the majority of their pre-season friendlies and have shipped a lot of goals. If Zinedine Zidane doesn't mount a serious title challenge this season, he could be facing the axe.

Valencia

Valencia beat Barcelona in the final of last season's Copa del Rey and also managed to sneak into 4th place ahead of underdogs Getafe, so will be coming into the new season on a high. Our resident puta, @Txrt, has a hard on for their manager Marcelino and star striker Rodrigo (15 goals last season lol). Valencia have been fairly quiet this summer. Their most high profile signing has been Netherlands No.1, Jasper Cillessen, from Barcelona. Their own goalkeeper, Neto, joined Barcelona in a swap deal + cash. Their big money signing has been prolific La Liga striker Maxi Gomez from Celta Vigo. Santi Mina and Jorge Sáenz (loan with option to buy) went the other way. 4th place will be the main target again.

Sevilla

Sevilla will be playing their football in The Europa League once again. A competition they have a love affair with (5 times winners). With Monchi returning to the club as DoF in March 2019, they have been very active in the market this summer. Sevilla have brought in now fewer than 12 players! Oliver Torres has retuned to Spain, following his former Porto manager Julen Lopetegui (sacked by Real last year) to the club. Sevilla have also sold lots of players, with star player Pablo Sarabia joining PSG for just €20 million. Colombian international Luis Muriel left for Atalanta in a deal worth €18 million. He's been replaced by the signings of Luuk de Jong and Moanes Dabbur who will have to compete with Wissam Ben Yedder for a starting place. With that kind of fire power up front and the likes of Banega and Vázquez supplying them, Sevilla will be looking to push Valencia for 4th place this season.

Athletic Bilabao

It would be rude not to mention the xenophobic and racist club that hail from The Basque Country in Northern Spain, as our beloved puta Txrt follows them. It's been a very quiet window for them due to their controversial transfer policy. In fact, the club have let go four long term servants in Ander Iturrapse, Markel Susaeta (both played against United in 2012), Mikel Rico and Sabin Merino (was on loan at Leganés last season). And they were all signed on a free, so no money has been made from their departures. But it should free up more money in terms of the wage budget should a highly rated Basque player emerge in the coming months and years. They still have quality players like Oscar de Marcos, Iker Muniain, Rául García and Iñaki Williams, so should maintain their record alongside Barcelona and Real Madrid as the only La Liga clubs to have never been relegated. But they will be aiming for Europa League football if they can go one better than 8th place this season.

Luis Enrique, who stepped down from the Spanish National team manager position, has said today that his 9 year old daughter Xana has died after suffering from cancer. Absolutely terrible news. 9

How? Apart from a bad 18 month spell in-between the 16/17 and  17/18 seasons, he's been very consistent. Ronaldo really benefitted from the space that Benzema created for him. Once he left,

It'll be really interesting to see how Atlético Madrid do, they've gutted a lot of their team and gone young which will be an interesting prospect under the safety-first Simeone. João Félix will be a fascinating watch over the season; seeing how Simeone uses him will be one of the most interesting tactical observations of the season.

Real Madrid have spent big too, I can't wait to see how Zidane does minus Ronaldo. Assuming he ran the purchases/sales for the window, it'll be intriguing to see how he does minus Ronaldo with his own signings. Was he just lucky in his first stint in charge, or is he truly one of the best around? How will Hazard do in a new league?

Barcelona are surely going to win La Liga again this season, but have really gone for a scatter gun approach to the transfer window in recent years, signing Griezmann and chasing Neymar this summer in spite of glaring deficiencies elsewhere. Losing Messi for them will be worse than us losing Ferguson IMO (our main fuck up was hiring 3 dinosaurs who all wanted to splash out madly; Barca need an intelligent contingency plan to survive at the top level).

Is that Lil Nas X??

That is the king. Our own Messi. The best player this club can have, and I'm glad the club committed to give him this huge contract. Because with our policy, there's few options, and he is a tremendously good one, and we have to protect him and do everything to keep him.

So happy for him and for me and for the club. Also, if you're all bored, la liga kicks off on Friday with a MASSIVE Athletic vs Barcelona from Bilbao in the first day of Fiestas de Bilbao.

It's also fiestas of Gernika, my town, so I won't be going to the stadium, but we'll be watching all together. Vamos siempre Athletic! Beti zurekin!

Nah, the club doesn't do that. And he doesn't either. Unless there is a massive fallout with either club, manager, or something goes tremendously wrong he'll stay AT LEAST 3 more years with us. The club signed him, found jobs for his parents when they moved here, always stood by him. He has said it hundreds of times, he will stay. And I believe he will.

Also, this is a massive FUCK YOU to all the idiots that always talked shit like "Oh he's from Ghana, he'll leave Athletic first chance he gets, he doesn't feel the club, he is just there because it suits him". Well, fuck you all.

He's from Barakaldo, Bizkaia. He is as big an Athletic fan as any other, and he loves the club much more than any of the fans that talk and talk and talk. I don't care if he's red, green, black, Romanian or from the moon. He is my number 9 and forever will be. The only Athletic shirt I have bought in the last 3 years has his name on the back.

Cannot wait until his younger brother makes it into the first team too.

I'll write a wall of text more or less giving my point of view about the league this year, the teams and what I expect and don't expect. I'll also talk about some guys I think will do good and some others I'm not too convinced about.

Great job by @O in the thread creation, by the way. And nice detail including the biggest club in there. Thanks.

Looks better in the 1st pic.

Tomorrow it looks better. Everyone out, jeans and white t shirt. Girls with blue gown and white top. Oh lord what a gift to humanity that day is. Everyone out drinking from 12 as well. Lunch with friends (we are eating this year in the same restaurant as my parents and their friends ((who are my friends parents)) so it will be twice as good). And then all night out. I'll upload pics of girls tomorrow to see the marvels the blue and white do. Salivating already.

ITV have the rights to La Liga this season. A lot of people don't know about this as it was only agreed last minute.

Athletic Bilbao V Barcelona is on ITV4 tonight. They'll be showing a game a week, as well as a MOTD style highlights show.

It's rare these things go in favour of the fan's wallet.
