I said this in the match day thread, but he looks terrified anytime the ball comes near him. Even when he tries to dribble out with it, he looks so awkward too. He's a liability, Bailly can't get fit soon enough.

Holy shit, is this what resulted in Newcastle's goal?!

Soul destroying seeing this useless prick earning a living at fucking Manchester United.  He genuinely doesn't belong at any premier league level club. Even the Championship is fucking pushing it. He can't be trusted to defend and is a complete panic on the ball, there's no way to be confident with him in the team. Embarrassing if we keep him during summer.

Yep, that's it. A cheap dive and an inability to (a) defend a free kick, and (b) an inability to pick up a runner who was gifted an easy chance.

You're spot here mate but food for thought a manager who has managed the likes of  Lucio Samuel Terry Ramos Carvalho Pepe all superb central defenders believes Smalling especially (and Jones) can be trusted.

Smalling is literally playing Maidstone form no scrub that even they wouldn't want him back!!

I've been very vocal of my dislike for Smalling for many seasons now.

I pray for the day we sell him and we have a competent center back in his place.

The man got carried by Blind for a season for fuck sake.

Is Loublaze actually Chris Smalling?

We'd have to check if the matches where Loublaze posts are by chance the ones Smalling is out injured, but I'd say there's a fair chance they are indeed the same person.

I remember wanting him out of the club and never near the first team after that red card against City two seasons ago... but then after that he went on a spree of games where he and Blind formed a partnership to again come back to the reckoning.... but again the red card in the FA cup could have cost us if not for Lingard.... at this point I would not mind any Tom Dick Harry in his place but please not him.... no where near to the first team... should be relegated to the reserves till we can sell him... if not pay him off and cancel his contract.... disgrace to the club.... esp after playing top flight football at such a big club, training with all the coaches and players he has seen over the last 6-7 seasons.... any average footballer would have learned enough to be better than what he is... moreover never seen a footballer so scared of the ball at his feet.... not even the kids in the park .... cannot express enough of what I think of him...

I knew he was due to drop off the cliff again, he has spells where he plays himself into "useful" form - and then the very next game he looks like he's never seen a football before.

Trouble is, increasingly the criteria for his "good performances" seem to be that he's not committed some gross act of stupidity - but when he tilts - oh boy is it cataclysmic.

Only 5 years ago Chris Smalling was playing non-league football for Maidstone United having been released by Millwall's academy. He was spotted by Fulham where he joined in 2008/09 and showed enormous promise, so much so that United bought him in 2010 allowing him to finish that season on loan with Fulham before officially joining up with United in the 2010/11 pre-season. His rapid rise continued when he made his senior England debut in 2011.

Standing at 6ft 4inches, it is no surprise that in the air Smalling is rarely beaten but he also show a remarkable turn of pace for someone so tall. Capable of playing at right-back, there is no doubt that his best position is centre-back and it is where his future lies.

He has been beset by injuries during his tenure at United and this may be a make or break season for him in many respects since he has been overtaken by Phil Jones in the CB pecking order and is now probably 5th choice CB.

He is a defender with all the tools to become a world-class operator if he can stay injury free. Learning from the likes of Rio and Vidic will clearly help his development and I hope he can continue growing this season. I see him and Jones as a future United and England central defence partnership if both of them get game time together in that position.

And you? What do you think of Smalling? Can he make his way back up the pecking order?
