UNDER-18S: UNITED 0 BLACKBURN 2

Barclays Under-18 Premier League | 28 November 2015, Aon Training Complex | Scorers: Mols 27, Rankin-Costello 80 (pen)

Manchester United's Under-18s were beaten 2-0 at home by Blackburn Rovers in the wind and rain at the Aon Training Complex.

Callum Gribbin had a penalty saved in the second half and it proved crucial as former Red Joe Rankin-Costello kept his nerve from the spot soon afterwards to seal victory for the visitors.

United fielded Kayne Diedrick-Roberts in attack in the absence of Marcus Rashford and Angel Gomes, while Indy Boonen started on the right of midfield.

Gribbin had already fired a set-piece off target when a second free-kick went much closer in the ninth minute, flying inches over the bar. Andrew Fisher also made a smart save to frustrate the no.10 before Rovers drew first blood against the run of play. Stefan Mols dived to divert a free-kick past Oliver Byrne with 27 minutes on the clock.

Mason Fawns almost added a second and, after the break, Ramirez Howarth whistled a drive just wide. On the hour, Ethan Hamilton galloped forward to shoot agonisingly across the face of goal and a tactical switch, moving Tim Fosu-Mensah into midfield, helped inject more purpose into the Reds' play.

Fosu-Mensah saw a deflected shot handled in the box but Gribbin's spot-kick on 64 minutes was too close to Fisher and he pulled off another save. It knocked the wind out of the hosts' sails as Fawns clipped the outside of the woodwork and Byrne kept out Mols.

Gribbin floated another free-kick over the bar but Rovers kept piling forward with Byrne making top blocks with his legs to thwart Fawns on two occasions. Another penalty was awarded, presumably for a tug by Ro Shaun-Williams from a corner, although the offence was not exactly clear, and Rankin-Costello made no mistake from 12 yards.

Blackburn had several chances to compound United's misery late on, the best of which was a Jan Pirretas drive that deflected just wide, as the final whistle signalled a sixth successive defeat.

United: Byrne; Fosu-Mensah, Williams, Dunne, Hamilton; Boonen, Whelan, Kehinde, Kenyon (Makela 81); Gribbin; Diedrick-Roberts (Sang 61). Subs not used: Dorrington, Thompson, Tanner.
