Why Manchester United are excited about young talent Omari Forson

Reports emerged in the national media this week stating Manchester United are set to hand Omari Forson a professional deal.

The Mail write United are particularly excited about the 15-year-old wonderkid, and have held off recent interest from Arsenal in the player.

Forson obviously has a long way to go, but he is making really encouraging progress in his career so far.

Already he is featuring for Manchester United’s under-18 side, and he has been a part of the team’s FA Youth Cup run to the semi-finals

Forson has made 11 appearances in total, seven in the under-18s league, and two have been starts. He provided an assist in United’s 4-0 win over Sunderland in early March.

It is notable that Forson has played in all four rounds of the FA Youth Cup so far, which included the win over Leeds at Old Trafford.

Each time he has been a substitute, yet it is a testament to his ability that United have sought to involve him in the team’s run to the semi-finals of the competition.

Route to the top

Forson began his career in West Ham’s academy, before joining Tottenham, and then was recruited by United last year, snubbing interest from City.

In his early years he trained at David Beckham’s Academy, which was based in Greenwich.

He is an England youth international at under-16 level, and is also eligible to play for Ghana.

Forson is a player with fantastic dribbling ability and natural balance. He has quick feet and is full of tricks to bamboozle opponents.

He has been playing for United’s under-18 side on the right wing, a position where the first team lack options.

There is a reported plan to sign Jadon Sancho this summer to solve that [Telegraph], but long-term, Forson could push to become a viable alternative.

Next season

Forson turns 16 in July and he will officially make the step up to under-18s football.

He will be expected to become a starter at this level and start influencing games on a regular basis.

United have shown this season that chances will be given at under-23 level to those who demonstrate the ability. Both Hannibal Mejbri and Will Fish have started under-23 games at just 16.

Forson is a player United are keen to keep pushing, and he won’t be held back.

It’s good that he is set to commit his future to United, and while there are no guarantees over which players will make it, and which won’t, Forson is clearly in a strong position to succeed and the coaching staff are very excited about him.

Five academy gems to watch at Manchester United over the next 12 months

Manchester United’s academy is bursting at the seams right now with talented prospects.

Some of these like Dylan Levitt and Ethan Laird will be pushing for loans, while Teden Mengi and Hannibal Mejbri could even be fast tracked to the first team.

The academy season has come to an end and a big year lies ahead in getting these talented young footballers back up to speed.

Leaving aside the obvious names mentioned above, here is a look at five young players who we are backing to take a big step forward in their development over the next 12 months.

Zidan Iqbal

Exciting young midfielder Zidan Iqbal made the step up from the under-16s to the under-18s this past season.

He has only played twice, and scored in one of them, the March victory over Sunderland.

He is poised for a big breakout next season and will likely play more regularly if Mejbri as expected plays more with the under-23s.

With more game time, we will get a closer look at what the attacking midfielder is capable of.

Mateo Mejia

United signed Mejia from Real Zaragoza last year, but he has had a frustrating start.

Paperwork meant his deal did not go through until October, and then he picked up an injury.

When he dropped into the under-16s for some game time, he scored four goals in a single match.

The young striker will be desperate to show what he can do, and if he can stay fit, 2020/21 could be a big year.
He scored 50 goals in one year at youth level for Zaragoza; there’s clearly a talented player here who just needs the opportunity to shine.

Shola Shoretire

Shoretire has been marked out as a player to watch since 2018 when Nicky Butt made him United’s youngest ever player in the UEFA Youth League.

The tricky winger is still only 16 yet he has already made an impact at under-18 level, providing three assists this past season.

He has been a regular for United in the FA Youth Cup and next season he will get even more chances to show what he can do.

The sky is the limit for this young lad; he will be helped if he has a growth spurt, so he does not get held back in a similar way to Angel Gomes at first team level.

Will Fish

Overshadowed by Teden Mengi, Will Fish should not be forgotten about.

The young centre-back made his under-23 debut at just 16 and he signed a professional contract earlier in 2020.

Fish is a composed defender who is good with the ball at his feet and strong in the air and he could forge a strong partnership with Mengi.

It will be fascinating to see if he can keep pace with the under-18s captain and get more under-23 appearances under his belt.

Anthony Elanga

This could be a huge upcoming year for Elanga. The Sweden youth international has been a driving force of the under-18 team’s success.

He has scored seven goals and provided three assists in nine games, and now is the time to step up, having recently just turned 18.

United have given him minutes at under-23 level this past season, although he has not had quite the same impact.

Next season he will be expected to rise to the challenge of being a regular starter at under-23 level, and influencing games. If he can do that, a pathway to the first team could open up.

Also signed Jurardo a right back from Barcelona, Fernandez a left back from Real Madrid and the above mentioned Hansen-Aaroen from Tromoso in Norway who recently made his debut for the first team at 15. Those 3 will be confirmed once they get international clearance.

Pye a left back/center back and Hugill a center forward were signed from Sunderland, and Vitek is a Czech Republic u16 international

Been over a good few times and likely he'll sign once he turns 18.

Also the academy are back training this week so we might see a few of them play against LASK after all.

An assist today a minute after coming on on his professional debut today.

Another assist at the weekend for our Russian friend AND his first goal today. Some say he was built in Putin special sport lab. 2 assists and 1 goal in 3 sub appearances at 15 is some start to the boys career. Also another 15 year old, Isak Hansen-Aaroen, who will be joining us at the end of this month got his first assist in mens football at the weekend too.

No we can't officially sign him until he's 18 because Russia isn't in the EU but I'd imagine we have some sort of pre contract in place. Pretty sure we're the only club he has been on trial with and he's said his dream is to play with United so i'd say if he keeps progressing we'll end up signing him.

Think it was similar with Rafeal and Fabio before we signed them, I believe we had a deal in place that they'd sign once they turned 18 so i'd imagine we'll do the same with him.

      Carrick set for Under-21 outing

Manchester United have a first, and only, Barclays Under-21 Premier League assignment in October when travelling south to face West Ham United this evening (Friday).

The match, which is being shown live on MUTV, presents Warren Joyce's third-placed side with an opportunity to regain top spot in the table above neighbours Manchester City.

Louis van Gaal has stressed he will use the Under-21 games to increase the fitness of some of his senior stars and has confirmed Michael Carrick will feature after being an unused substitute at West Brom. The midfielder will step up his comeback from an ankle operation against his former club’s second string.

James Wilson could be an option to partner Will Keane in attack but United's Under-21 top scorer Adnan Januzaj had a full 90 minutes at The Hawthorns. Keane, of course, scored a hat-trick in the Lancashire Senior Cup win at Accrington Stanley recently and is looking to get off the mark in the division this term.

James Weir promoted his claims with a goal in the behind-closed-doors friendly with Burnley last week but defender Paddy McNair looks set to miss out with a minor hamstring injury.

The Hammers, who will host the match at their Rush Green training ground, are second from bottom in the table but defeated Sunderland 2-0 in their last outing.

Loughborough 0 United Youth XI 2
A Manchester United Youth XI defeated Loughborough Students 2-0 with goals by Sean Goss and Ashley Fletcher.

Paul McGuinness fielded an Under-19 line-up that included Goss, Fletcher and Matty Willock in addition to his Academy squad in a match played in memory of the home team's former coach Mike 'Doc' Holliday.

The game was only eight minutes old when the hosts lost possession deep inside their own half and Marcus Rashford's intelligent backheel allowed Goss to fire a superb shot past Jack Howard and in off the far post. Rashford and Fletcher were convinced a penalty should have been awarded when they tried to reach a cross by Tyler Reid but Loughborough hit back and Dean Henderson was close to being embarrassed when his clearance struck Alun Webb and trickled wide.

After Rashford almost danced through on his own, Devonte Redmond spurned a glorious chance when scooping over from close range. Joe Riley was also off target from a promising position while Rashford was unlucky with a diving header from a Riley centre that flashed wide.

Willock started the second half brightly as the game opened up and, after firing wide, he curled a shot past Howard only to see it bounce back off the bar. United turned up the heat on a blustery night and, after Rashford was unable to finish off a devastating run by Riley, the no.9 capitalised on a mistake by Josh Dickens to release Fletcher and the target man finished clinically past the advancing Howard.

The Students responded with an incisive move that should have led to a goal by the lively Webb, but he snatched at the opportunity, before Jack Poxton tested substitute goalkeeper George Dorrington. United assumed total control but could not add a third goal during a dominant spell that contained some attractive football.

Fletcher was unable to profit from a poor Howard clearance, the keeper atoning by holding the venomous shot, Redmond drilled wide after slicing through the home defence and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's mishit cross dropped the wrong side of the far post.

At the other end, Poxon attempted a drive that deflected wide of a stranded Dorrington but came back off an upright while Fletcher was twice unable to convert decent openings as the chances continued to come thick and fast. Rashford spun Luke Trotman to race clear but supplied a disappointing finish from an ever-decreasing angle.

Rashford latched onto a Riley through ball but was again unable to add a third goal as he fluffed his shot with the Reds unable to match the 6-2 goalfest of two years ago and yet were still good value for the victory, even allowing for the fact Ben Ward-Cochrane's last-minute effort was ruled out for offside.

United: Henderson (Dorrington 46); Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Goss, Willock, Redmond; Rashford, Fletcher. Subs not used: Thompson, McTominay, Croskery.

      U18s: United 0 Sunderland 2

Manchester United’s Under-18s slipped to defeat against a strong and well organised Sunderland team at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday.

It was a cloudy, but pleasant and fresh morning when the action commenced and the opening exchanges of this early afternoon Barclays Under-18 Premier League clash with Wearside’s finest certainly had a bright and breezy feel to them.

Buoyed by victories in their previous two outings, Paul McGuinness’ side were looking to complete the hat-trick and their early play suggested that the Reds were in the mood to achieve that target.

Sunderland, who were kitted out in a smart, all-blue kit, also raced out of the blocks looking more than capable of giving the hosts plenty to think about.

All the ingredients for a lively encounter appeared to in place and that’s how it unfolded with neither side assuming command but enjoying enough moments in their opponents’ half to generate encouragement.

Real goal chances were rare in the opening period, but the visitors made the most of one they created when winger Jordan Blinko found the net past United’s George Dorrington in the 24th minute.

The Reds introduced two substitutes, Callum Gribbin and Zachary Dearnley, at the start of the second half and it was the latter who was presented with a great opportunity to claim the leveller but his shot, following fine work by Marcus Rashford, flew wide of the upright.

Sunderland, who had been enjoying a positive spell, doubled their lead in the 66th minute. Dorrington’s kick up field failed to find the intended destination and came to ground at the feet of Sunderland’s Ethan Robson. The Black Cats’ youngster took full advantage of his fortune and launched an unstoppable shot to give his side a two-goal cushion.

Not surprisingly, Sunderland’s second strike gave their confidence a huge boost and United had to dig deep in an attempt to salvage something from the contest.

Joe Riley raised hopes in the closing stages with two shots on target that required attention from Black Cats’ keeper James Talbot but the visitors held firm thereafter.

United: Dorrington; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, J.Thompson (McTominay 81), Redmond, Rathbone (Dearnley 46); Rashford, Croskery (Gribbin 46). Sub not used: Henderson (GK).
