Losing 4-1 to city. Not good at all..

Obviously a terriable result but i'd bet a decent amount of money that more of the players playing for United today will make the breakthrough here into the first team than players in the City team will at City, which at the end of the day is the main thing at acadamey football. Lots of very talanted young players in that United side and coming through.

Done Deal: Manchester United Sign Midfielder Wanted By Top English Clubs

Football League Two side Coventry City’s 15-year-old midfielder, Charlie McCann,is reportedly set to join Premier League giants Manchester United.

McCann, who is regarded as one of Coventry’s brightest academy players, is a die-hard Red Devils fan, and his move to United’s academy is nothing short of a dream come true for the young England international.

The news about McCann’s signing was revealed by Coventry Telegraph, as they stated that the club would be receiving a fee for the teenager.

Academy boss Rich Stevens said: “When a big football club comes knocking, and it is the club that Charlie supports, you must let him go and have that experience.

“We did not want to sell him, we did not need a fee for him even though there was a fee involved. Charlie goes with complete support from me and the rest of the staff from the Academy. He has been unbelievable for us, even making his England debut back in August.

“I have spent a lot of time with Charlie and I love the boy to pieces. I also have a lot of time for his family who are incredibly supportive.

“We will keep an eye on him and be here if he needs us. His parents told me that if it would have been any other club it would have been a firm no, but when it is the club that Charlie supports, that is football. Charlie goes with our full support.”

The teenage starlet, who got his first ever England under-16 call-up in July, has been at Ricoh Arena since the age of 7.

Of course that's what ultimately matters, they made some bad mistakes and City punished us. They're still in 2nd place so it's not all bad. Funny how their league mirrors the premier league at the moment!

Traore signs for Manchester United

French midfielder Aliou Traore has signed for Manchester United.

The former Paris Saint-Germain youngster is a France Under-17 international and accompanied the squad on the pre-season training camp in Austria. He made his debut in the 3-2 defeat to Wolves on Saturday in the Under-18 Premier League Cup.

"Traore is a boy we've been looking at for a while," Under-18s coach Kieran McKenna told MUTV recently. "He is a really powerful midfielder who likes to run box to box. He is very strong technically and is improving all the time.

"He's a nice man and his English is improving. He's settling in well with the boys and has taken to the club really well."

Traore turns 17 in January and should now be eligible for the FA Youth Cup campaign, with the Reds facing Derby County on 13 December.

It’s a load of shite. The kid has wasted almost 4 months of development because of the clearance issue. Training and friendlies just aren’t the same.

Yeah it's stupid and we always seem to have at least one new player a year who's affected by it, even Regan Poole was when we signed him despite moving from within the same league pyramid. I dunno if it's just us that seems to be affected and our admin team on the youth side needs a kick up the hole or all teams struggle with or what but whatever it is it's very harsh on the kids to be missing so much football at a pretty vital stage of thier development especially

Manchester United U23s relegated but Nicky Butt defends the Academy he’s helped to rebirth

Manchester United U23s were relegated from the Premier League 2 Division One on Monday evening after Derby County beat West Ham United 1-0, meaning the club could only finish as high as 11th place, providing they win their last match at home to Everton on Friday and Sunderland are defeated away to Swansea City on Monday. The likelihood is that United finish at the bottom of the table though, the position they have been in for a few months now.

Whilst many were quick to judge the Academy as a failure, without looking at facts or the work that has been done at the lower levels, the bigger picture tells you a lot about what United and Nicky Butt, the head of the Academy, have done to get the youth levels ready for the next decade or more. Two seasons ago, the U18s were the group that were struggling to achieve, losing 12 league matches in a row which saw Paul McGuinness leave the club. Since Butt has been involved in the Academy, recruitment has helped the lower age groups catch up.

Last season, after Butt had made some changes, the U18s finished second to Manchester City in the U18 Premier League North, finishing fourth in the top group in the second stage of the season. A year later, the U18s won the U18 Premier League North, having to face the Southern champions, Chelsea in a final game, with the structure of the U18 Premier League changing, again, ahead of the current season. Looking at the Academy a few years ago, there were changes that needed to be made, and they have.

Many would probably see the U23s as the area needing some help this season but in terms of developing youth, making changes form the top would not be all that beneficial. Players at U23 level only remain satisfied in that structure for a period of time, meaning that any changes would be in effect, pointless. Making the changes a few stages below, mostly at the same time, will garner a much better solution – the players rising through the ranks, solving the problems that way, providing their development continues to head in the right direction.

Whilst the U23s needed to be worked upon, the best way to do that would be to wait until next season and fill the squad with some of the players from the U18 ranks who would soon become too old for that level and the ones who were overachieving at the level, thus needing a bigger challenge. United have promoted both Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong to the U23s this season, the former currently on the sidelines through injury and the latter excelling and showing his abilities in the tougher Premier League 2.

Relegation will appease the ABUs who will assume it is another period of decline for United when in fact it will turn out to be something much different. Swansea City were playing in Division Two of the Premier League 2 last season and currently sit fourth in Division One, which shows that it is not the end of the world. Of course, the likes of Gomes, Chong and possibly even Mason Greenwood would not be playing against the best in the league next season but they will still be playing competitive football at this level.

Defending the entire Academy structure of United, Butt spoke to the BBC about it all, giving his opinions on the players at the clubs perusal, whether they could make it or not and how other clubs are not doing the same thing as United. Butt started by speaking about how he feels the Academy is thriving, saying:

“We are expected to develop players for Manchester United and bring them into the first team. In that respect, I think the academy is thriving massively.”

During a season, if there is an U23 squad of 20 players, Butt has suggested that five might be training with the first team, another five could be out at other clubs on loan which leaves ten players remaining. The team would then need to be bolstered by those at U18 level who need a bigger challenge or have grown out of the U18 league. Butt stated “that is fine if everyone else is doing it,” but it is not the case. Some clubs feel that success at U23 level is about winning games, not developing players.

When Butt was coming through the ranks at United, graduating as part of the famous ‘Class of 1992’ he was playing reserve football in stadiums with around 5,000 supporters, playing alongside the likes of Bryan Robson, Brian McClair, and Clayton Blackmore. That allowed players to learn from those deemed the best, who occupied places in the first team. Robson was a United captain and for a developing player, playing alongside him would have been a massive bonus and something to give the player a boost and want to be good enough to play for the first team. Butt said:

“It was open-age football in a stadium with 5,000 people watching. Flick that over to now: sometimes we go and play at a training pitch on a Tuesday afternoon with no fans and no first-team players.”

Currently, in the United first team, two players from the Academy, who could have still been playing at that level have broken through; Marcus Rashford, who is excelling after being brought through to cover an injury to Anthony Martial, scoring a brace on his UEFA Europa League debut, then again a few days later on his Premier League debut, and Scott McTominay, who was blooded in last season and has been a part of the first team under Jose Mourinho this season, playing a big role during periods of injury to midfield players.

Rashford started just two matches at U23 level before rising to the first team, McTominay played 31. Butt then came up with a fact about some of the U23 players, who know they may not make it at United, saying “if you are not around the first team at 20 or 21 you’re not going to be, it’s a fact.” These players are putting themselves into the ‘shop window’ ahead of a career away from United, with many seem to do well at. Just because it does not work at United does not mean it will never work.

Butt then spoke about Paul Pogba, a player United paid £89 million to bring back to the club from Juventus in the summer of 2016. The Academy chief suggested that Pogba may not have made it if he remained at United. Many have mocked United for letting Pogba leave on a free, with £800,000 compensation payable after the Frenchman refused to sign a new contract at the club in 2012. Butt does not see it as the error some suggest it was, saying:

“If he had stayed here and stagnated, he might never have been a footballer. There are players who go into the reserves for two or three seasons and they tread water. Pogba could have been one of those.

“When he was here, so were Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick, who weren’t exactly average players. Pogba left and became probably the best midfielder in the world at Juventus. We were lucky enough to get him back here but it is a massive feather in our cap that we helped him develop.”

It just goes to show that many people are sat there waiting for Manchester United to fail. Anything they think is failure appeases them. But the thing is that nothing is failing. Just because the U23’s have been relegated to Division Two of the Premier League 2 means nothing. The Premier League 2 is not as competitive as some suggest. It is not really a league where players develop. Yes, they can play alongside, or even against, some first team players, but there is a limit of three overage outfield players and one overage goalkeeper. That is not development.

United are a club who hold youth development at the heart of the club. It is the way the club has existed for so long. Half of the players to play for the first team have come from the clubs Academy and there is an over 80-year history having at least one player from the youth setup in a matchday squad. No other club in the top-flight in England have ever come close to that. Manchester United have developed many players, most have continued to play for other clubs after leaving the club, some have been a success, others not so.

Winning the Premier League 2 and the U18 Premier League is great, but it is not essential to develop. Look at the Manchester City side who dominated at U18 level a few years ago. They have not dominated at U23 level and most have not fought their way into the first team, not that many have in all honesty. That is the opposite of player development. If you do not actually help players develop and give them opportunities at first team level, they move on to another club and could become a big mistake – but only United make those, according to some.

I am sure the U23s will have a go in Division Two of the Premier League 2 next season, it will give those promoted from U18 level a chance to adapt, rise to the challenge and see if they are able to win promotion to Division One before the end of next season. The top team will be promoted, the second and third-placed teams will play a final match to win promotion to the top flight of the Premier League 2. United, on the other hand, may decide to loan many players out next season to the lower league, where first team competition for places helps players develop.

Currently, there are ten players on loan with other clubs, some of them are doing well to establish themselves, others will benefit from the time away from the club in order to forge a career in the game, whether it is with Manchester United or not. Whilst another Class of 92 is nothing short of a dream, there will continually be players who are given the chance to train and even play in the first team, whether it is part of the pre-season tour or actual competitive matches. United will continue to develop, nurture and promote young players on the way to becoming the best they can be.

Joe Hugill fills a need in Manchester United's academy

Manchester United are close to wrapping up the signing of promising Sunderland youth talent Joe Hugill.

The Guardian reported last month an agreement is in place for the 16-year-old to sign to join, with United beating competition from Premier League rivals for his signature.

It is important to remember that Hugill is a signing for the academy, and not the first team.

And to this end, Hugill is exactly what Manchester United’s academy needs.

GettyImages-1196137427-1024x789.jpg

Striker competition needed

Ever since Mason Greenwood followed Marcus Rashford’s path into the Manchester United first team, his absence at academy level has been felt.

That is natural, considering he scored more than 50 goals in two seasons for the under-18s, u19s and u23s before being called up.

United have been left without an obvious strike solution at under-23 level, to the point where attacking midfielders Angel Gomes and Aidan Barlow were filling the void in early 2020.

D’Mani Mellor has a shot, and made his debut in the Europa League against Astana, before injuries disrupted his season. A loan may be in his best interests.

United are clearly thinking long-term, and adding Hugill to the mix is the right move.

Currently United have a few options, but nobody has yet nailed down the role of the main man to follow Greenwood.

Dillon Hoogewerf has made a good start since his summer arrival from Ajax, starring in the under-18s FA Youth Cup run, before suffering a hamstring injury in the win over Leeds.

Deji Sotona has filled in, developing his game and showing he can play as a striker and not just a winger. He has pace to burn and is a strong option, scoring the winner in the Youth Cup quarter-final against Wigan.

Every Premier League Club's January Transfer Business Rated

Behind Hoogewerf and Sotona, United have last summer’s addition from Real Zaragoza, Mateo Mejia is an option, but this year he has not had an immediate impact, with his start delayed by red tape, before he suffered an injury on his first start.

Attacking midfielder Max Haygarth has also filled in up front at under-18 level when he has been fit (he missed several months with injury this season).

So it is evident to see United have options, but none who are yet wholly convincing. The door is open for each of them to step up.

At the same time, this is why United are looking to add Joe Hugill into the team to see what he is capable of.

Hugill plays for a wretched Sunderland side who sit bottom of the under-18 league, with 0 points from 16 games.

It is tough to get a measure of his ability from this, while also notable that at just 16, he is managing to stand out for a struggling team, netting in a recent defeat to Middlesbrough.

He has even played for the under-23s, scoring twice in a defeat to top of the table West Ham.

At just 16-years-old, Hugill’s impact is notable, and if surrounded by better teammates, he could really thrive.

United consider he is worth taking a gamble on, and there could be a real opportunity for him to stand out at Old Trafford.

Competition is healthy, and his arrival will spur on the talented forwards already in United’s set up.

Manchester United sign Radek Vitek

Manchester United have completed a deal to sign promising young goalkeeper Radek Vitek.

Vitek, 16, joins from Czech side Sigmy Olomouc, the club confirmed on their official website.

Sporting director Ladislav Minář said: “I am happy to say that Sigma is capable of sending another of its players to a top European club.

“The departure of a player of such a low age is primarily a great prestige, which is a reward not only for the club, but also for the player himself for his hard work. Secondly, it is also a financial aspect. If Radek were to play for the Manchester team in the future or move to another club, the financial satisfaction would be of interest to Sigma.”

Deal agreed and kept secret

Sigma’s website says the deal was agreed with United back in January.

However, due to his age, it had to be ratified by FIFA and the necessary paperwork has now finally been signed off and approved.

Radek said: “It’s a surreal feeling, a move to Manchester United is the dream of a lot of guys who start playing football. I’m really looking forward to it. I admit I didn’t even believe it when I found out about the club’s interest, but now it’s definitely a reality.”

What you need to know

Radek Vitek is just 16 but has already played at under-19 level for Sigmy Olomouc, making 10 appearances this season.

He had a trial at Southampton last November, before United signalled interest.

The Czech club’s website describe Radek as ‘nearly two metres tall’, and he has already represented his country at under-17 level.

Stacked goalkeeping department

United are spoiled for choice in goal, from the first team right down to the academy.

Let’s reel off a list of names: David de Gea, Dean Henderson, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant, Joel Pereira, Kieran O’Hara.

Then you have, Nathan Bishop, Matej Kovar, Paul Woolston, Jacob Carney, Ondrej Mastny, and Johan Guadagno.

Now Vitek is added to this list of players who, ultimately, are all targeting the same spot in United’s first team. It certainly won’t be easy for the new signing.

      Carrick set for Under-21 outing

Manchester United have a first, and only, Barclays Under-21 Premier League assignment in October when travelling south to face West Ham United this evening (Friday).

The match, which is being shown live on MUTV, presents Warren Joyce's third-placed side with an opportunity to regain top spot in the table above neighbours Manchester City.

Louis van Gaal has stressed he will use the Under-21 games to increase the fitness of some of his senior stars and has confirmed Michael Carrick will feature after being an unused substitute at West Brom. The midfielder will step up his comeback from an ankle operation against his former club’s second string.

James Wilson could be an option to partner Will Keane in attack but United's Under-21 top scorer Adnan Januzaj had a full 90 minutes at The Hawthorns. Keane, of course, scored a hat-trick in the Lancashire Senior Cup win at Accrington Stanley recently and is looking to get off the mark in the division this term.

James Weir promoted his claims with a goal in the behind-closed-doors friendly with Burnley last week but defender Paddy McNair looks set to miss out with a minor hamstring injury.

The Hammers, who will host the match at their Rush Green training ground, are second from bottom in the table but defeated Sunderland 2-0 in their last outing.

Loughborough 0 United Youth XI 2
A Manchester United Youth XI defeated Loughborough Students 2-0 with goals by Sean Goss and Ashley Fletcher.

Paul McGuinness fielded an Under-19 line-up that included Goss, Fletcher and Matty Willock in addition to his Academy squad in a match played in memory of the home team's former coach Mike 'Doc' Holliday.

The game was only eight minutes old when the hosts lost possession deep inside their own half and Marcus Rashford's intelligent backheel allowed Goss to fire a superb shot past Jack Howard and in off the far post. Rashford and Fletcher were convinced a penalty should have been awarded when they tried to reach a cross by Tyler Reid but Loughborough hit back and Dean Henderson was close to being embarrassed when his clearance struck Alun Webb and trickled wide.

After Rashford almost danced through on his own, Devonte Redmond spurned a glorious chance when scooping over from close range. Joe Riley was also off target from a promising position while Rashford was unlucky with a diving header from a Riley centre that flashed wide.

Willock started the second half brightly as the game opened up and, after firing wide, he curled a shot past Howard only to see it bounce back off the bar. United turned up the heat on a blustery night and, after Rashford was unable to finish off a devastating run by Riley, the no.9 capitalised on a mistake by Josh Dickens to release Fletcher and the target man finished clinically past the advancing Howard.

The Students responded with an incisive move that should have led to a goal by the lively Webb, but he snatched at the opportunity, before Jack Poxton tested substitute goalkeeper George Dorrington. United assumed total control but could not add a third goal during a dominant spell that contained some attractive football.

Fletcher was unable to profit from a poor Howard clearance, the keeper atoning by holding the venomous shot, Redmond drilled wide after slicing through the home defence and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's mishit cross dropped the wrong side of the far post.

At the other end, Poxon attempted a drive that deflected wide of a stranded Dorrington but came back off an upright while Fletcher was twice unable to convert decent openings as the chances continued to come thick and fast. Rashford spun Luke Trotman to race clear but supplied a disappointing finish from an ever-decreasing angle.

Rashford latched onto a Riley through ball but was again unable to add a third goal as he fluffed his shot with the Reds unable to match the 6-2 goalfest of two years ago and yet were still good value for the victory, even allowing for the fact Ben Ward-Cochrane's last-minute effort was ruled out for offside.

United: Henderson (Dorrington 46); Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Goss, Willock, Redmond; Rashford, Fletcher. Subs not used: Thompson, McTominay, Croskery.

      U18s: United 0 Sunderland 2

Manchester United’s Under-18s slipped to defeat against a strong and well organised Sunderland team at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday.

It was a cloudy, but pleasant and fresh morning when the action commenced and the opening exchanges of this early afternoon Barclays Under-18 Premier League clash with Wearside’s finest certainly had a bright and breezy feel to them.

Buoyed by victories in their previous two outings, Paul McGuinness’ side were looking to complete the hat-trick and their early play suggested that the Reds were in the mood to achieve that target.

Sunderland, who were kitted out in a smart, all-blue kit, also raced out of the blocks looking more than capable of giving the hosts plenty to think about.

All the ingredients for a lively encounter appeared to in place and that’s how it unfolded with neither side assuming command but enjoying enough moments in their opponents’ half to generate encouragement.

Real goal chances were rare in the opening period, but the visitors made the most of one they created when winger Jordan Blinko found the net past United’s George Dorrington in the 24th minute.

The Reds introduced two substitutes, Callum Gribbin and Zachary Dearnley, at the start of the second half and it was the latter who was presented with a great opportunity to claim the leveller but his shot, following fine work by Marcus Rashford, flew wide of the upright.

Sunderland, who had been enjoying a positive spell, doubled their lead in the 66th minute. Dorrington’s kick up field failed to find the intended destination and came to ground at the feet of Sunderland’s Ethan Robson. The Black Cats’ youngster took full advantage of his fortune and launched an unstoppable shot to give his side a two-goal cushion.

Not surprisingly, Sunderland’s second strike gave their confidence a huge boost and United had to dig deep in an attempt to salvage something from the contest.
