This is precisely the problem with have a non footballing CEO who just looked at the commercial side and backing the manager's demands. He just got the manager's the players they want.... for LVG the likes of Di Maria, Falcao.... and for Pogba the likes of Sanchez and Fred. And when he failed to get the demands of the Manager's he was deemed a failure like in case of not getting the CB in last summer which JM wanted.
Clearly the problem was about not having a DOP.... and that could be attributed to bringing in Managers who were expected to have a better experience to do it all by themselves like SAF did all those years. But the game has moved on, transfer market has changed drastically and post SAF there is hardly any blueprint for the future.
Even though a little late, atleast now we are hearing some traction to appoint a DOP which is still late in the game. Hopefully the restructuring of the club backroom staff will yield the necessary results. And this should be the final chance for Ed to get it right. If it fails now, he should be gone.

Signs seem to be that he'll join.
However it pans out it's ridiculous value even if we've added £20m to Lukaku. He was our 2nd choice striker and however Dybala might fit it's pretty obvious Lukaku did not. I have no idea what Juventus are doing or what they think they're getting. Lukaku's limitations essentially puts a cap on what your team can do and how they can play while they're looking for someone to take them a step further. Madness. Great move for him though. Way to fail upwards.
There's some red flags but Dybala has world class ability. The potential upside if it does click is just way too good to pass up, especially when the player given up offers so little. A risk worth taking. And he should get Rashford off free kicks. So joy.

have to agree with SG here, moneyball works well exclusively in baseball because the sport itself is individual-based. Every stats of a player will most likely translate as the same wherever the player plays regardless. There are so many intangible variable in football that cannot be translated into statistics.

I believe the most suitable phrase we are looking for is "value in the market", like one of previous manager said years in years out.

They pulled the plug as they thought he could be worth more and since then he's broken out with dominant displays in the league, fa cup and scoring the winner for Wales in our qualifier in his home debut for the country

5m more and 3 add ons is still very cheap in this market bearing those things in mind

Saw a quote in an article where they were discussing whether he is ready fit straight in to the first team. Basically said they see it as a signing that will set the "cat amongst the pigeons".
You have a young and hungry player who only cost £15-20m. No pressure on him to succeed instantly but will providing much needed competition for the other forwards.
He's not a signing that will set the tongues wagging but maybe that's a good thing with they way our recent 'c**ks out lads' signings have turned out. A welsh winger with electric pace being managed by a certain Mr Giggs for his country. Hopefully he will see this as a massive opportunity that he will grasp with both hands. Also, such a sad thing with his father passing recently, but hopefully that grounds him and he uses that as an added incentive to succeed.

Exactly.... we have seen all those fail. An outsider approach to come with a different perspective.
I kind of like Rio for the role. As a pundit, found him to be more balanced in his comments and criticism. Surely has the stature to command respect across.
On other hand in a way smitten by what Ajax have done to restore back their club by using their former players for the key positions.

My expectations for this role have since been downgraded from the time I realized that Woodward won't be giving up power. We clearly want to go the former player route and we definitely have a long way back but in all this I would rather have Phelan, Rio or Fletcher directing or advising on the recruitment strategy than having Woodward telling Mourinho that Alderweireld is no better than fucking  Jones and Smalling. What I like about Rio is that he is younger than Phelan so he is unlikely to be set in his ways and could be more open to bringing in a progressive coach to implement a modern style of play.
Fergie has obviously gotten to the Glazers and sold them his 'boot room' concept and this is what they are trying to implement. Mitten wrote a couple of weeks back that a number of experienced DOFs had offered themselves to the club and the club declined. Of all our former players Rio and Gary are the only ones with the gravitas to make this work as they are successful businessmen in their own rights and can blend that football experience with a bit of business knowledge.

This role is clearly going to an ex player, far too much smoke for it to go any other way. Fergie always spoke about getting former players involved in decision making processes and there are merits to that line of thinking just as they are to bringing in experience.

The thing though is that a majority of decisions for the summer are made now, transfers are initiated in this end of season period and we just can't afford the uncertainty of chasing after Pochettino all summer whilst the players we need would getting snapped up. I am just disappointed that ED seems to have shelved the DOF appointment which could condemn us to another summer of failure, this season failed in the summer when Jose and ED chose a cat fight over constructive engagement and squad building. Another thing is that even if the season ends disastrously Ole has shown that he can hold his own against some of the best sides in the league, games where Mourinho would throw the towel before they began, he has galvanized the club, energized the base and unified the players.

I just hope he says he's going to retire a year in advance so that every football fan in Spain can go the the stadiums to just give him an ovation for 90 mins.

After looking like a shadow of himself for most of the season, he's certainly back on top form.  He certainly has flaws, but I think people are too slow to recognise his strengths as well.
The character and desire he shows can't be underestimated either.
